The Abortion Pill | Medical Abortion
We provide free pregnancy assessments and information on medical abortions.
What is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill is a two-drug regimen (mifepristone and misoprostol), taken in two separate doses. Sometimes the abortion pill is referred to as medication, medical, chemical, or at-home abortion. It is used to end an early pregnancy (up to 10 weeks gestation). It is NOT the same as emergency contraception.
How Does it Work?
The first pill in the regimen (mifepristone) blocks progesterone. Without progesterone, the pregnancy cannot continue, and the fetus stops growing. The second pill (misoprostol), taken 24-48 hours after the first, causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus.
The abortion pill is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation. If used after this time, the risk of an incomplete abortion and the need for further medical intervention increases. In addition, the abortion pill cannot be used if the pregnancy is ectopic and/or not viable.
It is vital to have a pregnancy evaluation before making a decision to undergo any abortive procedure.
What if I Change My Mind?
If you have taken only the first pill in the regimen and have changed your mind about going through with the abortion, it still may be possible to save your baby if you act quickly. Contact the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline at 1-877-558-0333 immediately.
